How to HOST your Podcast Media for FREE
Yes, you read that correctly. This little post will tell you how to host the audio or video for your podcast for FREE.
What you will need to do is find an inexpensive place to host your own blog (I use Wordpress hosted by a third party), a few plugins, and a Posterous account.
Why Posterous? Because Posterous will allow you to upload audio, video and other files as long as they are under 100mb each. That is a lot of audio and a decent amount of SD video. I do not have my Posterous Audio or Video sites set to Autopost. I have my Wordpress blog post links to Twitter when I post from there as I want people to go to the blog, not to my Posterous.
Wordpress Plugins that I use -
- FeedWordpress - Allows the fetching of RSS feeds from any RSS source. Once the feed is pulled, it creates posts from the feeds content. With that you can automatically categorize the pulled feed's content based on the RSS feed, add tags, create meta data in the new post, publishing the new post or holding it for your review and editing.
- PodPress - Used to create a unified looking podcast. PodPress also HIDES the true location of the media file when its published on your blog.
Standard Podcast [0:49m]: Hide Player | Play in Popup | Download
Yes, there are other Wordpress feed catchers and other podcasting clients. I talk about these two tools because they are what I use.
Thats really all you need.
My process is that I post audio or video to Posterous and then wait for FeedWordpress to parse the feed and create a pending post in my WordPress install. Once thats done, I edit the post and pull it together with the PodPress plugin.
Here is what the post looks like before editing -
From the No Agenda Show. This is the Gitmo Nation National Anthem. Enjoy.
This WORKS out of the box, iTunes and other pod-catching software see the attached file so, if you don't care about looks, you can set FeedWordpress to automatically post the new items and you don't have to do ANYTHING else.
I don't like this 'stock appearance', Its not very pretty and you cannot play the file from the blog. That needs to be changed.
I will edit the post, copy the link to the media file, in this case 'Gitmo_Nation_National_Anthem_[LoudTronix.com].mp3 (352 KB) ' and put that into the PodPress section. I can then go back and add more information for the blog entry, as well as embedding the PodPress '[display_podcast]' tag into the post and, viola!, you can now play the file from the blog page as well as download the file and the file will be caught by iTunes and others thru RSS. You can see the Gitmo National Anthem post here.
The same procedure holds true for video. Here is an example from a recent video I posted this way using Posterous and Wordpress.
From the pulled RSS, the post originally looked like this -
Via Mashable and YouTube.
A song about the iPogo.
Sesame Street is a production of Sesame Workshop, a nonprofit educational organization which also produces Pinky Dinky Doo, The Electric Company, and other programs for children around the world.
After editing the post, pulling in a YouTube embed for the same video (you can see it here) -

With PodPress adding a download link to the .mp4 file residing on Posterous.
I hope you found this little tutorial of use.
